First Impressions - an exhibition

These are my images for the 2023 First Monday Exhibition - we’re a small, friendly group who meet monthly to eat, chat photography and show each other what we’re working on. We hold this exhibition annually as a focus for our current work but, as individuals, our work is entered into other forums.

This year I’ve been creating images that lack sharpness, that evoke a mood or impression of the scene that caught my attention. They are, almost by definition, like sketches - I don’t spend a lot of time in creating or processing them - like any other techjnique, the results have evolved and I now get a sense of what the end image can be when I’m composing the original capture.

The resultant images seem to print well - I’ve used Permajet Art Silk paper, which seems to have been my goto medium for a year or three now - it works well with these kinds of images and brings back some texture and detail (which I know is odd for a project that eschews sharpness)

Late afternoon work on a house - note that it takes two to hold the ladder, one to carry out the work.

A mix of old buildings and new - the old are warm and fuzzy, the new are colder somehow.

When I’m walking around a new town, this is in Tenerife, I find myself looking up and down all of the interconnecting streets - this technique is my attempt to evoke that feeling of not knowing where to go next.

Again, looking up and then down the street - not sure which direction to shoot so I take both - thank you very much.

These four square images are from closer to home - equally sunny, though inevitably cooler days on the Norfolk coast. it’s nice to make images of open, empty spaces but it’s also grand to involve other visitors and show what they are up to.
